Violent Video Games and Their Effects on Adolescents
ââ¬Å"According to data recently released by The NPD Group, in 2012, U.S. video game software sales reached $6.7 billion (174.8 million units) and computer game sales were $380 million (13.2 million units)â⬠(Improving Economy). To many, the violent video game industry has turned all adolescents into mass murderers. However, theyââ¬â¢re absolutely wrong. Very seldom do adolescents who play violent video games commit acts of violence, and the ones who do usually have a mental disorder. Instead of blaming the tragedies that occur on violent video games, the news media should explain to people that a large percentage of young males play violent video games, indicating that the two are uncorrelated. They should alternatively research other possible solutions to the crisis. In lieu of negatively affecting peopleââ¬â¢s lives, video games could potentially improve their lives! School massacres have become more prevalent in this last decade. As part of the police investigation that concludes the shooting, they look for a motive. The first thing that people are frequently told from the news media is that the suspectââ¬â¢s motive was from playing a violent video game, not that they have a mental illness that may have caused them to execute their mass murder. Sane players of video games grasp the fact that they are playing a video game. ââ¬Å"Their ability to distinguish between fantasy and reality prevents them from emulating video game violence in real lifeâ⬠(ProCon). Commentary on the Tess of the dUrbervilles Essay Example For Students
Commentary on the Tess of the dUrbervilles Essay The extract from Tess of the dUrbervilles by Thomas Hardy comprises of the character of Tess being drawn towards the music that an angel is playing on his harp. The atmosphere seems almost magical as it seems to encapsulate Tess to the extend that she becomes in a trance-like state. The setting of the passage is in the Tesss garden at night-time, and the reader feels the sense that all of the animals and the plants around her our alive. Hardy has used stylistic devices such as similes, dictions and the use of sounds, in an attempt to exemplify mystery throughout the piece. Hardy conveys atmosphere using several techniques, but the most pronounced method he uses is with sounds. The passage begins with, The soundlessness impressed her as a positive entity rather than a mere negation of noise. It was broken by the strumming of strings. The silence implored at the beginning of the piece is effective in building up suspense and contrasting against the rest of the passage where a melody of music is constantly playing. The feeling of having no sound can also be seen as being special, even eerie, as silence is seldom heard since there is usually other noises happening, yet she still refers to it as a typical summer evening. The line implying that innate objects seem endowed with two or three senses, aswell promotes the magical atmosphere by implying that the rest of the garden is alive. Using the harsh word, broken it seems to imply that Tess had been enjoying the peacefulness and had been interrupted by the harp. This is also suprising since the harp is renowned as the music of love and is beautiful yet she prefers the stillness. Hardy uses personification in describing the musical notes, wandered in the still air. By adding human characteristics it helps add to the magical atmosphere. It intrigues the reader why music which has heard before suddenly appeals to her and Hardy uses a similie to describe her feelings towards the music, a stark quality like that of nudity. One is given a distinct impression that the music seems to be casting some magic spell since it seems to dominate her and one doesnt imagine that crawling in her back garden at night is normal. This idea can be confirmed when we realise that she even thought that the execution was poor she was still as fascinated as a bird. The garden is portrayed as being overgrown and uncultivated which heightens the tension for the reader because it is like she is exploring the unknown outskirt where many do no venture. The line, keeping behind the hedge so he would not guess her presence, builds up intrigue since the reader wonders why she needs not to be seen. The garden is described very menacingly as if it were trying to stop her in the quest to find where the music is coming from. The offensive smells, weeds formed a polychrome, and staining her hands with slug slime, are just sum of the examples of the way that the garden is portrayed. Extensive imagery is used in this stanza such as cuckoo spittle and red and yellow and purple hues, which are effective in vividly describing the trek that Tess had to endure in such minute details that we, the reader, feel part of her journey. Tess was conscious of neither time nor space exaltation undulated There is no distinction between the near and the far. The sentence suggests Tess is in a hazy, incoherent state as she can not coprehend what is near or far. It also gives the feeling of space since there are no boundaries restricting her and she seems isolated and vulnerable. The reference to the shining star can in a biblical sense be seen to be like a guide for her The tone of the poem is quite dark and intriguing as upon reading one is at a mystery to why she is wanting to reach the music
Can you feel compassion for The Woman In Black Essay Example For Students
Can you feel compassion for The Woman In Black? Essay Throughout the book the woman in black is portrayed with an image of evilness. All of the terrible things she did, all the children that died and all of the coincidental things that happened when she was around. Mr Kipps was tormented I think from the very beginning of his adventure, at Mrs Drablows funeral. In the sixth chapter THE SOUND OF A PONY AND TRAP Mr Kipps hears the sound of a screaming child drowned in the marsh with a pony and trap. While he was fully aware what was going in he was helpless against the woman in blacks evil powers. Also in the chapter in the nursery Kipps once again is confused when the nursery looks almost as if it had just been used as all of the toys and clothes were set out. It was not until the chapter a packet of letters when Mr Kipps realised that the woman in black was not all about evil, but about longing and revenge. In this chapter we learn of a lady named Jennet who inevitably had to give her child up for adoption. She could not afford to give him the upbringing he deserved and so had to give him to a wealthy woman who could look after him well. It was unfortunate that the woman happened to be Mrs Drablow, Jennets sister. Jennet was allowed to visit her son, but it just wasnt the same. Having her own child growing up with ought really knowing her must have torn her apart. Quote And the boy was brought up a Drablow and was never intended to know his mother. But in the end, the pain of being parted from him, instead of easing, grew worse and she returned to Crythin. She was not welcome at her parents house and the man the childs father had gone away for good. But Jennet was so distressed that she threatened violence, and in the end the sister relented just so far. He became more and more attached to the woman who was, when all was said and done, his own mother, more and more fond, an as he did so, he became colder towards Alice Drablow. Jennet planed to take him away, that much I do know. Before she could do so the accident happened, just as you heard. The boy the nursemaid, the pony and trap and its driver Keckwick. Jennet saw it all, she was waiting upon their return. She went mad and wasted away until she died. Jennet wasnt an evil character at all, what she wanted was her son, it was the only thing her life was worth living for, her only route to happiness. But she couldnt have happiness so she didnt want any one else to have happiness either. And so we come to the last chapter the woman in black. Where the woman in black gets her revenge, revenge on Mr Kipps. Things were starting to look up for Mr Kipps. He married Stella and after a year they had their own son, Joseph Arthur Samuel. And then one Sunday they went to a park with Joseph. They saw that you could take rides on a pony and trap. A two person ride around the park. Stella took the chance and with Joseph went for the ride. When they had gone Mr Kipps saw the woman in black, and I think it was then he started to panic as he remembered what had happened with the other pony and trap near El Marsh House. Then he was relived to see the two coming back round the corner. .u1d1e923b76f228a44e37acc0b181185c , .u1d1e923b76f228a44e37acc0b181185c .postImageUrl , .u1d1e923b76f228a44e37acc0b181185c .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u1d1e923b76f228a44e37acc0b181185c , .u1d1e923b76f228a44e37acc0b181185c:hover , .u1d1e923b76f228a44e37acc0b181185c:visited , .u1d1e923b76f228a44e37acc0b181185c:active { border:0!important; } .u1d1e923b76f228a44e37acc0b181185c .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u1d1e923b76f228a44e37acc0b181185c { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u1d1e923b76f228a44e37acc0b181185c:active , .u1d1e923b76f228a44e37acc0b181185c:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u1d1e923b76f228a44e37acc0b181185c .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u1d1e923b76f228a44e37acc0b181185c .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u1d1e923b76f228a44e37acc0b181185c .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u1d1e923b76f228a44e37acc0b181185c .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u1d1e923b76f228a44e37acc0b181185c:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u1d1e923b76f228a44e37acc0b181185c .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u1d1e923b76f228a44e37acc0b181185c .u1d1e923b76f228a44e37acc0b181185c-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u1d1e923b76f228a44e37acc0b181185c:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Love marriages EssayBut the woman in black stopped the horse from reaching him, it went off track, crashed, the baby was killed and Stella was badly injured. Ten months later Stella too died of her injuries. Just as things were going great, everything went wrong. Jennet had got her revenge; she had ruined Mr Kippss life just as her life was ruined. In conclusion I think that I could feel compassion for Jennet, I can see that she had to go through a lot of pain, but what I cant see is why she had to take her agony out on so many innocent people like Mr Kipps and his family.

Monachopsis free essay sample
*Sixth grade, walking to my locker. I see one of my closest friends standing with a group of older students. She walks up to my locker, points at one of my locker luckies and laughs. ââ¬Å"O-McDonald had a farm!â⬠she laughed on. They all joined in with the laughter. She didnââ¬â¢t see me, nor did I need her to. Monachopsis,ââ¬Å"The subtle but persistent feeling of being out of placeâ⬠(The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows). I think everyone has had this feeling at least once in their life. Most people donââ¬â¢t even know there is a word for this feeling. When I was in sixth grade, I didnââ¬â¢t know there was a word for this feeling either. In that moment, I was mostly just upset. Confused with the fact that my once close friend was now making fun of me. Deciding to rather let it go than make a huge fuss over it, I went on with my day. We will write a custom essay sample on Monachopsis or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page That day seemed to be sluggish. The friend that I once got in trouble for talking too much to, would barely say a word to me. That day turned into days, those days into weeks and those weeks to months. Those months defined by the birthday parties that I wasnââ¬â¢t invited to, glazed with the secrets and rumors that stabbed into my back. All topped with the final cherry, of the friends that I was once so close to pushing me out of the group as a hole. Monachopsis,ââ¬Å"The subtle but persistent feeling of being out of place, unable to recognize the ambient roar of your intended habitat,â⬠(The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows). Not knowing where I belonged was like the weight of an elephant crushing down on my small shoulders. Heavy as if the life was going to be squished right out of me. I think again we have all experienced this feeling from the loss of a loved one, joining a new school, or quitting a sport. Itââ¬â¢s that feeling of being shunned, shutout, and shooed away that eats away at us from the inside out. () ââ¬Å"The only thing worse than not knowing where she belongedâ⬠¦ was knowing where she didnââ¬â¢tâ⬠(Tessa Shaffer). This quote represents this feeling as well. $This feeling, the acid of the brain, torturing what is there until nothings left.# A hole, where the feelings of being close to someone, having friends, and even the feeling of belonging once stood. @Monachopsis, ââ¬Å"The subtle but persistent feeling of being out of place, unable to recognize the ambient roar of your intended habitat, in which youââ¬â¢d be fluidly, brilliantly, and effortlessly at home,â⬠(The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows). As time continued on, my feeling seemed to as well. Finally, a new friend group fished me out of that dark hole, bringing brightness, joy, caring and a feeling of home back into my social life. These people pulled me from the darkest corners of my mind, the place where the walls were high and emotions buried deep. They broke through the walls, crushed the barriers and erased the fake smile that I wore, replacing it with a real one.% They demolished the feeling of monachopsis, the darkness that once graced my mind and filled it with the golden hues of belonging. The feeling of being stuck in a winter blizzard slowly melted into a spring where I let go more and more, unti summer was finally in full blast. The summer that warmed my mind. The summer that made me who I am today.
